The First 1,000 km After Buying a Used German Car
The first 1,000 km after purchase should be boring and disciplined.
Do not start with cosmetic upgrades. Start by turning the car from an unknown machine into a known one.
Week one
Begin with the basics:
- Full diagnostic scan
- Oil level and leak inspection
- Coolant level and residue check
- Tire age and pressure check
- Brake pad, disc, and fluid inspection
- Battery health test
If the service history is incomplete, assume the missing maintenance is now your responsibility.
First service priorities
Prioritize fluids and filters before accessories:
- Engine oil and filter
- Air filter
- Cabin filter
- Fuel filter where applicable
- Brake fluid if age is unknown
- Gearbox service if due or undocumented
Watch behavior
During the first 1,000 km, listen and observe. Track coolant level, oil level, cold-start behavior, shift quality, idle smoothness, and any warning messages.
Practical rule
The goal is not to make the car perfect immediately. The goal is to remove unknowns before they become expensive.
