P0014: Exhaust camshaft timing over-advanced, bank 1

The exhaust camshaft position is more advanced than commanded or is slow to return to the expected position.

Common symptoms

  • Uneven idle
  • Poor acceleration
  • Rattle on startup
  • Engine warning light

Likely causes

  • Sticking exhaust cam actuator
  • Dirty oil or blocked oil passage
  • Timing-chain wear
  • Camshaft position sensor plausibility issue

First checks

  • Check oil condition and service history
  • Compare commanded versus actual cam angle
  • Inspect solenoid screens and timing data

Important

Repeated cam timing faults deserve diagnosis before long drives or hard acceleration.

A fault code identifies a detected condition, not a failed part. Confirm manufacturer-specific subcodes and live data.
