P0016: Crankshaft / camshaft timing correlation
The ECU sees the crankshaft and camshaft signals outside their expected relationship.
Common symptoms
- •Long cranking
- •Rough running
- •Reduced power
- •Cold-start rattle
Likely causes
- •Stretched or incorrectly installed timing drive
- •Cam or crank sensor signal fault
- •Oil-pressure or variable-timing control issue
First checks
- •Confirm oil level and correct oil specification
- •Read freeze-frame and manufacturer-specific timing values
- •Inspect timing mechanically before replacing sensors
Important
Continued driving can risk internal engine damage when mechanical timing is genuinely incorrect.
A fault code identifies a detected condition, not a failed part. Confirm manufacturer-specific subcodes and live data.
