P0016: Crankshaft / camshaft timing correlation

The ECU sees the crankshaft and camshaft signals outside their expected relationship.

Common symptoms

  • Long cranking
  • Rough running
  • Reduced power
  • Cold-start rattle

Likely causes

  • Stretched or incorrectly installed timing drive
  • Cam or crank sensor signal fault
  • Oil-pressure or variable-timing control issue

First checks

  • Confirm oil level and correct oil specification
  • Read freeze-frame and manufacturer-specific timing values
  • Inspect timing mechanically before replacing sensors

Important

Continued driving can risk internal engine damage when mechanical timing is genuinely incorrect.

A fault code identifies a detected condition, not a failed part. Confirm manufacturer-specific subcodes and live data.
