P0217: Engine coolant over-temperature condition

The engine controller recorded coolant temperature above its safe operating threshold.

Common symptoms

  • Temperature warning
  • Reduced power
  • Cooling fans at high speed
  • Coolant loss

Likely causes

  • Low coolant or leak
  • Failed water pump
  • Thermostat stuck closed
  • Fan or sensor fault

First checks

  • Stop and allow the engine to cool
  • Pressure-test for leaks
  • Check pump flow, thermostat, fan command, and sensor plausibility

Important

Do not open a hot cooling system or continue driving; overheating can distort the cylinder head and damage the engine.

A fault code identifies a detected condition, not a failed part. Confirm manufacturer-specific subcodes and live data.
