P2458: DPF regeneration duration

A diesel particulate filter regeneration took too long or did not complete as expected.

Common symptoms

  • DPF warning
  • Cooling fans running often
  • Reduced power
  • Fuel economy drop

Likely causes

  • Short-trip driving
  • Thermostat not reaching temperature
  • DPF pressure sensor fault
  • Excess soot from EGR, injector, or boost issues

First checks

  • Check coolant temperature and thermostat behavior
  • Read soot load and pressure values
  • Review regeneration history and driving pattern

Important

Repeated incomplete regeneration can dilute oil and push the DPF into a high-risk soot load.

A fault code identifies a detected condition, not a failed part. Confirm manufacturer-specific subcodes and live data.
