That does not mean every B47 is good or every N47 should be rejected. A documented later N47 can be a better purchase than a neglected B47 with emissions faults, poor oil history, and recently cleared codes.

Why the N47 has the stronger timing-chain warning

The N47 family is closely associated with timing-chain wear. The chain is positioned at the rear of the engine, so access can make a complete repair expensive. Risk varies by production period, maintenance, oil quality, operating pattern, and previous work.

Listen from a true cold start. Metallic scraping, rattling, or rhythmic chain noise from the rear of the engine deserves specialist investigation. A quiet engine is encouraging but does not prove that the chain has no wear.

If a seller claims the chain was replaced, ask for an itemized invoice showing the workshop, mileage, parts, guides, tensioners, seals, oil, and warranty. “Timing done” without evidence should not carry the same value.

What changed with the B47

The B47 is the newer modular diesel and is generally viewed as the improved used-car choice. It does not remove normal diesel risk. EGR coolers, DPF loading, NOx or AdBlue equipment on later applications, boost control, cooling components, and injectors can still create expensive repairs.

The practical advantage is a lower level of timing-chain concern when compared with the N47, not immunity from timing or lubrication problems.

DPF and EGR condition matter on both

Short urban trips can prevent complete DPF regeneration. Check calculated soot and ash loading, distance since regeneration, differential-pressure readings, exhaust-temperature sensor plausibility, and whether the oil level is rising through fuel dilution.

Inspect EGR operation and recall history where relevant. Coolant loss, emissions warnings, repeated forced regeneration, or an intake heavily contaminated with soot can change the buying decision.

Compare service history, not only mileage

Frequent correct-specification oil changes are more reassuring than a long official interval with little supporting paperwork. Build a timeline from invoices and inspection records.

A higher-mileage motorway B47 with consistent maintenance may be healthier than a low-mileage example used only for short trips. The same logic applies to an N47, although chain evidence remains especially important.

Diagnostic checks before buying

Use BMW-capable diagnostics and review more than the dashboard:

Scan results need interpretation. One correction value or stored code is not a diagnosis, but patterns across several systems can expose neglect.

Road-test differences to watch

Start cold, allow the idle to stabilize, and then use a route that includes town driving and sustained load. Check for smoke, hesitation, boost drop, limp mode, cooling warnings, and rough restarting when hot.

If fitted with an automatic gearbox, assess the transmission separately. A healthy engine does not compensate for harsh shifts, converter shudder, delayed engagement, or missing gearbox service history.

Final buying decision

Choose the B47 when two cars have equally strong condition and history. Its newer design and reduced timing-chain reputation make it the safer default.

Choose an N47 only when the price reflects the risk and the car has unusually strong evidence: clean cold-start behavior, credible timing history, sensible oil intervals, healthy diesel-emissions data, and a specialist inspection.

The engine badge narrows the risk. The individual car, paperwork, scan data, and inspection decide the purchase.
