Look for the usage pattern

Ask about commute length, motorway use, and recent warning lights. Very low annual mileage is not automatically good for a diesel. Repeated short journeys can stop regeneration before it completes.

Read the right data

Request calculated soot load, ash estimate, differential pressure, exhaust temperature sensor data, last regeneration distance, and EGR-related faults. A generic no-code scan tells only a small part of the story.

Check the thermostat

A diesel that runs too cool may regenerate too often or fail readiness tests. Log coolant temperature from cold and compare it to expected operating temperature after a realistic drive.

Buying rule

Buy the TDI that matches the driving profile. If the car has short-trip history, rising oil level, repeated fan activity, or unclear DPF data, price in diagnosis before trusting the bargain.
