When Is an Oil Leak Actually Serious?
Oil leaks are common on aging German cars, but they are not all equal.
The correct question is not simply "does it leak?" The correct question is "where is the oil going, what can it damage, and how hard is access?"
Low urgency
Light sweating around a gasket may be manageable if oil level is stable, there is no burning smell, and the leak is not reaching belts, alternators, coolant hoses, or the exhaust.
Medium urgency
A leak becomes more serious when it:
- Leaves drops on the ground
- Creates a burning smell
- Spreads across multiple components
- Requires frequent top-ups
- Makes inspection difficult because the engine is coated
High urgency
Act fast if oil reaches belts, pulleys, exhaust components, turbo areas, or electrical parts. Oil contamination can turn a gasket job into a larger repair.
Buyer advice
If you are buying the car, ask for the repair quote before you negotiate. A small leak in a difficult location can cost more than a larger leak with easy access.
